Shot in the Dark
The Task; to document the live performance of Drama after Dark; a presentation of Edgar Allen Poe's and Gorey's works at the Huntington Library, without intruding on the audiences experience, after dark! In other words ITS DARK, there are no lights except for candles, lanterns and the stars. The use of a standard on camera flash is prohibited and the idea of a noisy high ISO digital and the lack of good high ISO transparency film, presented a challenge only a geek photographer could love. How to get an exposure with no light and how to focus in the dark?
The end result; 14 megapixel files shot at f8 @ 125th of second at iso 100 and 200. 99% + were exposed correctly, and 80% were in focus.
How it was done; For years I have been experimenting with infrared films and Digital capture. for 2 years I shot at a local night club, capturing the dancers and musical acts and sometimes the patrons. I started doing this because I had purchased a Sony digital camera with "night shot" which is basically infrared. this worked fine for this environment since there was some lighting so ISO's stayed around 100-200 and noise was more of an acceptable style. I tried the Sony at the huntington but it wasn't acceptable and was to noisy.
I thought what I need is a light that is outside the visible spectrum say + 720nm and a camera that can see above 720nm. I found with a little modification of a camera It could see outside the visible range of light. but where do I get light, would the candles be enough? Probably not. I found a manual on camera flash in a box at the studio probably, from high school and a chipped high bandwidth pass filter that looked like they would fit together with some glue and tape. Thus invisible light that the camera could see.
The results were GREAT
In this shot you can see all the natural light at the scene 3 lanterns and one candle.
All in all it was a fun experience scientifically and culturally.
